Apologies to My Mother - Dinner is Ready

I'm going to start a new thread called "Apologies to My Mother." Once I get started, you can scan all of the entries to this subject on the right. Of course, this is my first one, so let me get started.

Mom, I apologize for never coming to dinner when you called.

"Colleen & Michael, dinner is ready."

"Seriously, dinner is ready and now getting cold. Get a move on."

"I am NOT calling you again. Get up/in/down here right NOW!"

I must have been an evil child. You always threatened us with just- wait-until-you-have-children-of-your-own and now I think I have it worse. I didn't get the opportunity to grow into my role as caregiver. I just inherited it.

I feel your long, possibly lost pain, even though I am quite sure you must be over it by now.

When I say dinner is ready, I really mean "Dinner is ready, it's hot, and I've been WORKING on it. I had to do the shopping & pay for all this food, and then schlep it all inside and find a home for it, and ensure that it's healthy and meets all of the needs of our family, and you better show some appreciation for my efforts, and come to the table, and act like you like it ... NOW."

Not when you get to a commercial.

Not after a bathroom pit stop that lasts 30 minutes. NOW.

Anyway, I know that I didn't come when called, and that is the pits. Mom, I am sorry. I was ungrateful and unappreciative of the great skills you exercised in our kitchen. You worked all day and still had a mostly-yummy dinner on the table, at the same time, each night. (DISCLAIMER: it was only MOSTLY yummy because I was traumatized by nasty peas for most of my childhood. I know that they were good for me, but I still hate 'em)

It is because of you that I am such a good cook, and I love you. Please forgive the rotten child in me.

Cover the plates with foil or another plate, leave it on the table and when they get there, they get there. Once it's ready you're done with your job....cold, too bad

I agree with Mom. Cover the plate and be done with it.
You are a friggin' good cook and they should be running to the table when you call. I would!!

Soooo true. While I don't remember "always' being late for dinner - I can share that my two boys who are no more than 4 feet away in front of the TV - take about 4 NOW!!!!!!!!!s - before they actually break out of their trance and take the 4 steps. You are soooo right. You go out of your way to prepare a great meal, and feel like it's just not at it's best when it is ice cold. I think there should be a law against not coming to the table when you are called. Dear Mr. Obama....
