January 20, 2009: The OBX Blizzard & The Presidential Inauguration

OK, it wasn't EXACTLY a blizzard, but we did get a whopping 2 inches of snow that crippled the Outer Banks. Local businesses began closing about 10:00, and we enjoyed a nice, warm day inside.

In addition to letting the dogs out every 13 minutes to play in the white stuff, we spent a good portion of the day watching the Inauguration of President Barack Obama.

Politics are tricky in my house, and I do my best to stand clear of debating the issues. I don't know enough to really make my case, and I'd just prefer to avoid the impending arguments over who is right or wrong, what is "fair," what is offensive, etc. Personally, I thought the day went quite well, and was moved to tears at a few points.

I was not a fan of Michelle Obama's yellow suit, but yellow is the color of hope, so I let that go.

The day went straight down hill during the Benediction. Reverend Joseph Lowery said these words,

"Lord, in the memory of all the saints who from their labors rest, and in the joy of a new beginning, we ask you to help us work for that day when black will not be asked to get in back, when brown can stick around ... when yellow will be mellow ... when the red man can get ahead, man; and when white will embrace what is right"

and Chip had a stroke.

I must say that, at first, it struck me as, well, not the BEST thing to say. But in really thinking on it, is it WRONG to ask people, ALL PEOPLE, to embrace what is RIGHT? Chip, on the other hand, is not quite so interpretive. He's a literal speaker and thinker. He raged, he Googled, he called friends & family for their opinions, he re-wound the DVR and took notes... he called Bill O'Reilly for God's sake! Insert heavy sigh here ->____.

I tried to give him a different perspective, to explain that alliteration is limiting at times, and more. Shortly after I decided to nod a lot, admit that I could see his point but would not agree, and lay low.

I believe that we need to be the change that we wish to see in the world. SEE it! BE it!

I am hopeful that this administration will be able to implement the change that we need to move our country forward. I wish them open minds, compassionate hearts, and patience. Oh yeah, I wish that for all of us, too!

I personally think that statement from the Reverend didn't make much sense to me. Seems he was putting all white people down and bringing up things that for the most part are behind us. Let's all hope that the future years bring what is needed in the world (not just our country)regardless of whatever your political beliefs are.

Good Lord! No wonder you stay from political conversations in your house. Makes me glad I'm single, alone, and don't see my family very much at all. On the other hand - the prayer was stupid - glad I didn't hear it or I would have gagged.

I was having a ministroke with Chip when he said that and still just am amazed at his ability to offend every race! yellow/mellow? really?
