Goodbye, gEarl

Yesterday we saw the remnants of Hurricane Earl move North up the coast. This was the first time that we had to consider an evacuation. There was a part of me that wanted to take off, but the old people refused to get out of bed, get off the couch, pack, and I couldn’t leave Chipper here to manage all of that on his own. The island was buzzing with excitement & fear, and I did the usual grocery store run… TP, batteries, bottled water, a new book… and got ready for the CAT 4 storm to come ravage our home. We were glued to The Weather Channel, watching anxiously as the eye made it’s way East. (oh yeah, I also drank a nice bottle of Cabernet and passed out napped for a few hours. That certainly took the edge off!)

Noteworthy items:

  • Our neighbor loaned us a generator. How nice is that?!
  • When a State of Emergency is declared, the stores are supposed to stop selling alcohol. I had no idea! *Chip’s Beer & Wine stayed open all day, God bless ‘em.
  • If you don’t leave when they call your area for the evacuation, you WILL get stuck in traffic.
  • Generally, people were VERY kind and courteous as they prepared to hunker down or flee.

Jim Cantore MarqueeThroughout the event, it was a BALL watching  my ‘friends’ bash Jim Cantore on Facebook. What a schmo that guy is! He scares everyone half to death, and sensationalizes every little detail. I’m telling you – he cannot be trusted!

When TWC rolls into town, many local businesses show their lack of support – It’s the best part of any OBX storm.

As it turns out, we only experienced gusts of wind and lots of rain. That was it. Other than the pool overflowing, all is well, and now I have more TP than any one household could need.

Until next time,

I keep saying, have all of the weather channel there. You have been lucky when they come to town.
