OBX Eats: Ocean Boulevard... Again

Well, hello there!

Ocean Boulevard is located in Kitty Hawk, a stone's throw from our office (if you throw really, really far). It's an American Bistro, a posh place to relax, and a super place to enjoy a fine wine out on the patio. They boast a seasonal menu, lush with local ingredients, which I love.

Ah, forget the fluffy stuff. I’m jumping right into this post. Every time I look at a soft crab I want to eat it. Right now it’s 9:00 in morning and soft crabs aren’t necessarily the optimal breakfast snackeroo. (Although, I would probably eat it anyway.)

On this particular evening, the hubby and I were our enjoying our Friday “Date Night” and decided on OB. One of the specials was local soft crab on a wild mushroom risotto that had pancetta, wilted spinach and… and… shrimp. There was certainly shrimp in there, because I can see it in the picture. Did I mention that I also had a few dirty martinis? (Yeah, that explains a lot!) This meal was a treat for this foodie. I ate slowly and savored every last bite. The crab was cooked to perfection- well seasoned and crispy, and not covered in a heavy batter. I hate that. The risotto was creamy and rich, and the pancetta provided a perfect balance of salt.

Now, soft crabs aren’t for everyone. I’ll be honest. I grew-up in NJ where soft crabs are bait. Luckily, my husband’s family is from Baltimore and they are crab aficionados. Now I can’t get enough of them. I think the trick is to start slow… you need to not think about what it is, and munch on a crispy leg. It’s like a french fry, but a zillion times better. From there you gain confidence! They really are quite delicious, so take a chance and go for it. We’ll only have soft crabs a little while longer, so don’t miss your opportunity! You’ll be glad you did. (If you try one, drop me a note and let me know what you think!!)
