OBX Eats: Blue Moon Beach Grill

Howdy there, Foodies!

Let me start by wishing you all a Happy Memorial Day! Although we mark this occasion with a day off and a BBQ, please remember the men and women who sacrifice for our safety and quality of life every day. I dedicate this delicious restaurant review to our uniformed guests of Seaside Vacations. You fight the bad guys so I don’t have to… Thank you!

Even though I’ve fallen a little but behind on my food blogging, I haven’t stopped eating (trust me). As a matter of fact, I’ve had lunch & dinner at this restaurant a few times, and thought, “WOW! Don’t let me forget to write about this…” and then, well, life happens. Don’t mistake my delayed review for a lack of yumminess. You cannot beat Blue Moon Beach Grill. You cannot. Don’t even try. It’s THAT good.
The Blue Moon Beach Grill is a quirky little space with a beautiful hand painted concrete floor and colorful local art. They serve amazing, southern comfort food, with a creative kick. The bar has elbow room and space to people-watch. Their goal is to provide a “Once in a blue moon” experience, and they never fail to achieve this.

Owners Scott and Melissa Shields put so much love and “umph” into this business it’s palpable. My favorite thing is that Scott is a CHEF. A Real chef, that likes to be creative and rock a little funk on the normal fare. Between the food craftsmanship, top-notch staff (Hello, Cara!), and love of the Outer Banks, you really cannot go wrong. You cannot. Don’t even try. Did I say that already? Huh! I must mean it.

On this particular day, I had the pleasure of dining with a few of my co-workers after we had inspected a few of our vacation homes. Gloria, seated on the left, is one of our Property Managers. Brittany, seated on the back right, is an Assistant Property Manager, and Greg is our Director of Property Services. I’d like to say we were served extra food because we worked so hard that day (which we did), but the portions are always that big. I had the local soft crab beast-of-a-sammy, with a pesto aioli and fries. Always, always get fries, and dip them in their home-made Ranch dressing. That crab was so big it should have been illegal. (It was not illegal, though. I promise!) In the background you can see Brittany’s Mahi BLT sandwich special, that had a big ole slab of bacon on it. Everything is better with bacon, right? Can I get an, “Amen?”

I don’t normally do this, but I dare to look at the menu and not feel hungry: http://www.bluemoonbeachgrill.com/index.php/menu

This is what I have eaten at BMBG (brace yourself)… Fried Calamari (light and tender, never a rubber band in the bunch), Seared Sea Scallops over Seaweed Salad (I get it EVERYTIME), Fried Green Tomato Napoleon with Goat Cheese (tangy and delish), Fish Tacos (locally caught), the Truckstop (get it with the fried egg on top), Shrimp & Grits (it’s good with gouda!), Bouillabaisse (lite and still filling), Angel’s Delight (is flavorful, and well, delightful), everything they’ve ever had on special… and lots of other things. Feeling frisky? Ask for the Grilled Caesar Salad w/ the Crab Cake. It’s a fave of everyone that has it.

Blue Moon is situated in the Surfside Plaza near Jockey’s Ridge. It’s the same shopping plaza at the Harley Davidson store. You can expect a crown during normal beach feeding hours, so if you have a large party, plan to go a little earlier than normal. If you have a little wait, wait. It will be well worth it.

Eat Local. Always.
