OBX Eats: Ocean Boulevard

Maybe being a food blogger is a curse. We had a few chilly days lately and, well, my coat was a smidge tight. (Who has a coat that’s tight? Ugh!) I had every intention of letting our loyal readers (Hi, Mom) know that I had started a new diet. 3 days in to it, I met the fatal blow – an evening at Ocean Boulevard in Kitty Hawk. Colleen? Meet your match.

Ocean Boulevard is a place unto itself. It’s a grown-up place inside – dim lighting, candles, white table cloths, and outrageous chefs. Outside they have a patio area that fronts the beach road and is just steps to the beach. Live music ranges from Blues to Jazz to Soft Rock. The bar is intimate and the bartenders are smart, funny, and shake up a fantastic dirty martini. Ask for Leslie, tell her I sent you!

The menu is seasonal and features regional delicacies, including seafood from Wanchese (crossover the bridge going to Manteo, hang a left at the light, drive until you see it). It’s Outer Banks Seafood Central.

Let’s get to it, shall we? When I arrived, I ordered a water. (Remember, I was on a 3-day health binge up until then!) Then I looked at the menu and fell apart.

My husband ordered the Pepper Seared Rare Tuna Sashimi with Poke. It came with baby Shiitake-Wheat Noodle Salad, a crisp Wonton, Nori pickled Cucumbers, Ika Salad, pickled Ginger and a Soy-Dashi Sauce. Wasabi on the side. Our bartender put the plate in front of him and then I ordered a dirty martini. Vodka has no calories if it’s really cold, right? I was hoping that would be enough of a rebellious move. Not so fast.

I struggled with my choice, but settled on the Porkloin Cutlet “Saltimbocca” with house made Duck Prosciutto, fresh Sage, Rosemary Mozzarella, Roast Garlic Gnocchi with Marsala Pan Sauce with Portobello Mushrooms & Swiss Chard. Now you know why I couldn’t have a packet of goo mixed with water! If I told you that it was awesome, it wouldn’t be enough. If I thought that my husband wouldn’t leave me behind, I would have lifted the plate and cleaned it up the old fashioned way. It was a glorious meal.

Need more? I’ll tell you anyway! OB has an amazing wine selection, great little nooks for a romantic night out, and seating for bigger groups. They have great salads and small plates. Get the big plate, trust me on that. They always have great parties for Mardi Gras, St. Patrick’s Day, New Year’s Eve… almost all Hallmark holidays. On Friday night, they serve dinner until 10:00pm, and then transition to a Late Plate menu from 11:00pm until 1:00am. You can’t beat it if you are a night owl!

If you are at all interested, click on the link below and look at their menu. I might suggest having a snack first.

Eat Local. Always.
